Lessons & Events

What We Do

We provide private individual lessons as well as structured group lessons for up to 12 people, in your home or community center. We also coach current players to either hone their skills, get acclimated to the new card each year, or prepare for tournament play. And the most fun of all, we help you plan and execute Mah Jongg events such as cruises, weekends, retreats or as a special event at your family reunion.

Lessons

Joan McGrath, aka “Green Dragon”, uses the curriculum written by Michele Frizzell and Debi Barnett, created for the American Mah Jongg Instructors Association. She has taught community group beginners classes in a six-week, 90-minute/week format that allows the students to learn and absorb the complexities of the game in relaxed, slow immersion sessions. By the end of the six weeks, students can play competently and quite often are able to claim their first Mah Jongg within three or four sessions.

Joan is currently preparing for the exam to become a certified member of the American Mah Jongg Instructor’s Association.

For those who are reluctant to commit to a six week course, Joan provides private instruction in 90 minute segments. A minimum of four successive weeks are designed to build the level of understanding in incremental sessions, increasing the level of play each week. Joan’s approach is to move the student into the “deeper waters” of Mah Jongg just a bit at a time, much the way parents bring children to the beach to experience the ocean, toes first, then up to the knees, then waist, etc.

Coaching

For those who are currently playing, but wish to become more skilled, Joan provides coaching sessions to individuals or groups of four. Joan will watch your play and assess what skills need improvement, as well as listen to you describe your own playing technique. This can include better analysis of the current NMJL card, making better Charleston decisions, becoming more facile at changing between different hands, or learning how to play defensively.

When the new NMJL card is released, Joan provides group sessions to analyze and acclimate players to the best strategies for play. Joan can also work with your playing group to prepare for their first tournament.

Skill Building

With a bow to the expertise of Michele Frizzell, Joan can work with you individually or as a member of a playing group, to hone your Charleston skills and how to determine what the other players are doing so that you can play both defensively and strategically.

Joan can also work with your community governing body to facilitate and organize a Mah Jongg program. It has been her experience that playing Mah Jongg helps to integrate new residents to the community and builds lasting bonds of friendship between people who otherwise might not get to know their neighbors.

Event Planning

Working with you or your community governing body, Joan can organize, facilitate and execute Mah Jongg events, including weekend retreats, beach escapes, tournaments, cruises, fundraisers, or even as a special event at your family reunion.
